There were the unlit dinghies in puma evospeed the Malacca Straits, clueless as to the danger a night in our path could present. There were the fishing boats off Japan and the fishing boats off the Solomons. There was the fleet of halogen-lit squidders near Chile and the busy trans-South Atlantic shipping lanes. As we sail north through the Caribbean and finally arrive to very modern civilization in Florida, it's hard not feeling a tinge of admiration for the simpler sailors we meet out here.
The months of May - August are the best times of the year to see Pumas. The Parks are uncrowded, and the main prey of the Puma (the Guanaco) concentrates in a specific part of the Park, thereby concentrating the Puma population as well in this are. Our Puma-tracking safaris are designed to put you face to face with this magnificent cat.On a Guided Puma Tracking tour, you drive around the National Parks accompanied by a tour guide in your vehicle who can also assist puma clyde with the driving well. Your guide is there to treat you to an amazing puma-tracking experience and to make sure every moment of your adventure is fun, safe and memorable. AM/PM:Your daily program can change at any time depending on the weather conditions, your own interests and what the current season is like in the Torres del Paine. A dedicated puma tracker will also be hiking across the puma lands to search for pumas and other wildlife for us and will radio in if, and when, they spot something of interest. If you choose to, you can also become a second tracking team and live the experience of tracking a puma first hand.
This requires patience, dedication and silence to keep our eyes and ears open for signs of pumas in the distance. If you don't wish to try tracking, however, we will simply continue on enjoying the Torres del Paine National Park with other excursions and site visits. A common area of the Park to spot pumas is Sarmiento Lake, which contains large formations of sedimentary rock around its shores. These rock formations also feature a series of caves which are a favorite spot for pumas to find shelter from the wind or sun. Our tracking here will take us around most of the western edge of the lake in search for puma families and solitary adults that are often spotted in this area during the quieter fall, spring and winter months.
